Artist STATEMENT
I just love making cool stuff. In my studio practice, I use the most contemporary photographic processes as well as explore historic techniques. My artwork employs state-of-the-art technologies combined with historic processes. This broad interest in technical aspects has led me to create a range of art from immersive digital installations to large-scale digital prints to small-scale traditional tintypes. In my current photographic practice, I concentrate a great deal on portraiture. Through my use of personal connection and Baroque lighting styles, I strive to validate the existence of my subjects in a manner that respects the ideals of craft and process.
My fascination with lighting carries over from portraiture into still life. I am experimenting with photographing junk food with the same care as historic Baroque artists. I am looking to explore the themes of vanitas and memento mori in the depiction of contemporary objects and culture. I find developmental inspiration through critical, theoretical, science fiction, and horror comedy media of all kinds. My research is driven to further explore theory and experiment with a wide range of techniques in the production of my work.
Within my installation work I focus on the ideas of memory, data, and photography and their interplay with each other and the techno landscape. Absurdity and information overload also creep into these works, a signal to geopolitical influence and the manipulation of consumer media.
