Even though I spend a lot of my time in the lab mixing chemicals and conducting experiments, I am a photographer, not a mad scientist. I am currently based in South Dakota, but I began my career as a photographer in San Francisco after completing my enlistment in the US Navy. Later, I earned my MFA in Photography from the University of South Dakota, resigned from an arduous office job, and returned to work as a full-time photographer. I love my time in the darkroom because I began my career during the age of film, Polaroid, and chemistry. I specialize in portraiture, and when I create portraits, I empower my subjects to be present and to be themselves in the moment, so my images are authentic. Through my use of personal connection and lighting, I strive to validate the existence of my subjects in a manner that respects the ideals of craft and process. My use of light, both natural and artificial, is a key component of my work and exhibits a strong Baroque influence.
